Disney’s Art of Animation Resort

Some information was shared by Disney Imagineer, Gary Hoffman about the Art of Animation resort at the D23, Destination D event in May. Here is some of the information and artwork that was shared.

As you enter into the resort you enter the check in building you are immersed into an animators imagination and production artwork from the 4 feature films that make up the resort.  It provides you the first glimpse into what the animator dreams about in creating the movie and will be done in bright colors and character development sketches. The four movies are Lion King, Little Mermaid, Cars and Finding Nemo.  The Lion King, Cars and Finding Nemo areas will only have rooms that are family suites.

The family suites (1120 suites) will still sleep 6 people but the floor plan is a redesigned plan from the current floor plan of family suites at Disney’s All Star Music Resort.  One of the changes is the table in the rooms will actually drop down and a Murphy style full sized bed will come down from the wall showing the main character from that movie. The Little Mermaid area will continue to be the traditional floor plan (864 rooms) sleeping 4 people.  Another difference from the traditional value resort is the buildings with family suites will have interior hallways to the rooms as opposed to the exterior design of the other value and moderate resorts.  Some of those suites will have windows that overlook the courtyard.

Each of the four movies will have a courtyard area that will contain either a pool (3 total) and/or a large play area.  These courtyards are scaled in size so that you are the size of the character to help you see that characters world from their perspective.  With the new family suite building design Disney Imagineers have a flat four-story surface for the interior courtyards.  The buildings will contain large murals that recreate the sets of the movies on the courtyard side of the building.  On the other sides of the buildings they will be designed to look like animation sketch pages with the characters from the movies.  All of the artwork is original for the resort.

Here is a layout of the resort and the artist sketches for the check in area.

More information about each themed area will come in the next two blogs.
