Weekend Trips – Akron, Ohio

In this business, I have met people from all over the world, with most of our friends in the United States.  I say this in the most loving way, but a lot of them are crazy!  We had a party earlier this year where friends from the Dallas, Texas area called on Thursday and said they would be up to Wisconsin for the party on Saturday!  They just got in the car and drove up here!  We have other friends who on a whim decided on a Thursday to drive to Walt Disney World from Chicago for the weekend.  Usually there is a bit more planning than that, but not always.

I have heard of people just getting in the car for a long weekend and picking a direction and just driving for a set amount of time to see where the road will take them.  Others pick a spot in between their home and friends’ homes and go there for a weekend get-together.  So this got me thinking.  Last Fall we went to Louisville, Kentucky by car for a wedding and saw friends on the way.  We’ve gone South, so what about East?  What if we wanted to meet up with friends from the East Coast sometime without flying?  I could do another 8 hour car ride.

Now to figure out where to go.  8 hours will take us to somewhere in Ohio.  There are a lot of choices, but alphabetically, we would end up in Akron.

Akron is the fifth largest city in the state of Ohio.  It is located just south of Cleveland towards the eastern side of the state.  Akron is an industrial area, known as the Rubber Capital of the World or Tire City due to being the one time home to all four major tire manufacturers.  There are a number of festivals that happen in Akron each year including the All American Soapbox Derby, the National Hamburger Festival, Founders Day and some of the events for the 2014 Gay Games will take place in Akron.

So Akron is a great place to live, but what about to visit?  Akron has a number of major parks.  Just outside of Akron is the Cuyahoga Valley National Park.  Lock 3 Park in downtown Akron is an entertainment hub for the city.  There is an outdoor amphitheater there for live music and events year-round.  Biking and hiking the trail that follows the Ohio and Erie Canal Towpath Trail is a fun pastime.  This trail has a floating observation deck section over Summit Lake.  It attracts over 2 million guests each year. Head to the Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad for a fabulous ride through the park.  There are even beer and wine tasting excursions on the railroad.  The railroad will take you to the Village of Peninsula to check out some boutiques and galleries.

The Akron Zoo is just west of downtown and is home to more than 700 animals.  They even have a special exhibit of seven different kinds of jellyfish and you can touch starfish, sea urchins and crabs in the touch tank.

There are a number of museums and Hall of Fames in and near Akron, including the Pro Football Hall of Fame in Canton and the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland.  Or how about a tour of the Harry London Chocolate Factory in Canton?

So who wants to go to Akron now?  Of course, your Travel On A Dream agent can help you book your weekend trip to Akron, or anywhere else you might want to go.  Where should we go next?

In the ‘good ole days’ we once booked a flight at 8 AM, drove to work and took the time off, and returned home by 11 to catch the airport shuttle.

We actually phoned the B&B in Cambridge, England from the plane to make a reservation for that night!

Tracy – That was NOT the first time we decided to pick-up and go somewhere on a whim. That’s one of the great things I love about “my” Bill, he is always up for an adventure. A few years ago, Bill looked at me and said, “We have Annual Passes burning a whole in our wallets. We’re not doing anything this week. Let’s go to Walt Disney World!”. This was on a Sunday night. Monday was a whirlwind of shopping, bording our dog, getting the minivan serviced and Bill getting some work done. Tuesday morning at 5 am, we were on the road heading from Dallas, TX to Orlando, FL with the kids. Sometimes in life, you just need to “Go” when the mood strikes you. It makes for a some great adventures. =)
